Observation Narrative
Plot location: Marsh between upland edge and gut channel, just N of the mouth of a tributary swamp, ca. 0.7 miles NW of the VA/NC line where it crosses the Northwest River. Plot center marked with a 1" white PVC pipe.
A marsh similar to that in plot NWER027P, but containing a larger proportion of Typha spp. Currently the within-stand distribution of Typha is more or less scattered, allowing a consdierable diversity of other species to grow. Dense stands of Typha, which result from disturbance and tend to exclude most other competitors, are a threat to the viability of low graminoid marshes of this river.
